Wisdom and Quails may seem to be unusually associated, but the term is designed to reveal that God can and does do things that for us are unusual.

We can form opinions and fall into habit patterns, little reasoning that God has different ways to reach us, meet our needs and lead us safely to our destination.

I love those who love me;  and those who seek me will find me.

Riches and honor are with me,  lasting wealth and righteousness.

My fruit is better than gold, fine gold,  my produce better than the finest silver. Proverbs 8:17-19.

Happy the person who finds wisdom,  the person who acquires understanding;  for her profit exceeds that of silver,  gaining her is better than gold,  she is more precious than pearls— nothing you want can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand,  riches and honor in her left.
Her ways are pleasant ways,  and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who grasp her; whoever holds fast to her will be made happy.  Proverbs 3:13-18

We all have needs and they can vary extensively.
Health and healing when ill, a partner in life, food, water and shelter or guidance and direction are a few. Whatever they may be, God has assured us that He not only cares, but is actively involved in our lives. He cares...
Paul explained:

God has proved his love by giving us his greatest treasure, the gift of his Son. And since God freely offered him up as the sacrifice for us all, he certainly won’t withhold from us anything else he has to give. Romans 8:32

This does not give license to do what we want and be greedy or selfish in any way. James said in chapter one that we can ask God for wisdom—and receive it. He also stated:
You desire, and do not have. You murder, and are jealous, and are unable to obtain. You strive and fight, and you do not possess, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask evilly, in order to spend it on your pleasures. James 4:2-3

To ensure that we do not pray amiss, we need wisdom that is far superior to our own natural wisdom. God not only knows what we need, but how to meet that need. He knows where those things we need are to be found. He know when we will need them and He knows how to get them to us.
The Lord told us to lock ourselves away with our Father in a private place—just the two of us.
He revealed in Matthew chapters five and six that the Father has everything under control and He stated truth. Our Father will take care of us. He knows what is going on. We can be assured that God will take care of us.

Trumpets

In Numbers chapter ten, God gave precise instructions to Moses concerning their travels towards the Promised Land. He commanded Moses to make two silver trumpets and that the trumpets were to be sounded in particular ways at certain times. Sometimes both were sounded and on other occasions only one was sounded. Different blasts were to be made to convey different meanings. The Ark was to go before them.

God has clear and precise ways, principles or methods for The Church to apply.

God had clear and precise instructions in providing for the needs of the people and as I illustrated, He also has a way to get things to us and this is something that affects us all in different ways. This is a topic that should be investigated more on another occasion. Natural reasoning dictates terms.

We tend to look to other people for what we need and whilst God can and does use one person to help another, we adopt attitudes of looking to men for our needs.

Various churches and ministries ask for offerings and donations, often asking people to “sow into our ministry” and I put it to you that this is being abused. The tithe is an example, as it often relates to money, but the tithe is not about money. It is provision for widows, orphans, strangers and Levites—and it is literal food. God’s people were to eat the food at God’s appointed place as an act of worship and thanksgiving for the harvest! Money only comes into it when they had to travel somewhere for that purpose. They could then purchase food at their destination.

God was already providing for their needs by supernatural means—the manna, but some of the people were not content. We are much the same today. Israel came out of Egypt, but so too did what we may call foreigners or strangers. The Tanakh calls them riff-raff, saying that they had a gluttonous craving. It was for the things they had left behind.

The lesson for many of us is that we cannot allow anyone not in covenant relation with God to adversely influence us. We cannot have a foot in each camp but some did and when such a thing happens it usually takes us away from God.

The result was that many people became dissatisfied with G0d’s provision. They were not content with the miraculous provision of the manna God was providing and they complained. Their complaints wearied him and ministry can be very tiring. People can draw from you, make demands of you and sap your energy if we allow it to happen. When the woman with the issue of blood touched Jesus, He felt it flow out of Him.

God then took of the anointing on Moses and shared it with the 70 elders.
This is interesting in that the anointing does not diminish. It can be “passed on”.
Jesus was anointed for ministry and he “passed it on” to the disciples and now to those of us who accept it. Few do!
Elijah passed it onto Elisha and Elisha  wanted to pass it on to the king, but the king did not understand this. Elisha died and that did not  happen.
This is a principle that the church needs to learn. If we do not, we can and shall be deceived and deception is the first “sign” Jesus gave us concerning end time events in Matthew 24. See also Paul’s warning against false teachers as follows:

The Holy Spirit has explicitly revealed:At the end of this age, many will depart from the true faith one after another, devoting themselves to spirits of deception and following demon-inspired revelations and theories.
Hypocritical liars will deceive many, and their consciences won’t bother them at all!
They will require celibacy and dietary restrictions that God doesn’t expect, for he created all foods to be received with the celebration of faith by those who fully know the truth.
We know that all creation is beautiful to God and there is nothing to be refused if it is received with gratitude. All that we eat is made sacred by the Word of God and prayer.
If you will teach the believers these things, you will be known as a faithful and good minister of Jesus, the Anointed One. Nurture others in the living words of faith and in the knowledge of grace which you were taught.
Be quick to abstain from senseless traditions and legends, but instead be engaged in the training of truth that brings righteousness. 1 Timothy 4:1-7

Israel had been traveling in the wilderness for a generation and was on the verge of entering the Promised Land.
They set out in stages on their first journey towards it.
Change was coming!
The presence of God was foremost. The Ark was to be carried only by God’s appointed men who had carry it in a particular way. The trumpet calls were clear and distinct so that no one could misunderstand its significance or purpose. It prevented assumptions and private interpretations.
The trumpet calls were to be a perpetual reminder to all generations.

Paul spoke trumpet call in 1 Thessalonians 4 in reference to what we call the rapture.
Now, brothers, we do not wish you to be ignorant concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you be sad as others who have no expectation. For if we believe that ¢ died and rose again, so also Elohim shall bring with Him those who sleep in ¢.
For this we say to you by the word of the Master, that we, the living who are left over at the coming of the Master shall in no way go before those who are asleep.
Because the Master Himself shall come down from heaven with a shout, with the voice of a chief messenger, and with the trumpet of Elohim, and the dead in Messiah shall rise first.
Then we, the living who are left over, shall be caught away together with them in the clouds to meet the Master in the air—and so we shall always be with the Master.
So, then, encourage one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18

Many of the Old Testament accounts convey much relevant meaning to us today.

Quails

A problem had emerged in that many people started to become complacent, started to complain and wanted return to their old way of life, but it was a life in bondage. We cannot go back. The New Testament describes such apostasy as a dog returning to its vomit. Jesus spoke of that in Revelation when anyone meets certain criteria like being lukewarm, He would spew them out of His mouth.
God gave us free will. He will not violate that, so if we choose to follow a certain path, He will do all that He can to bring us back on track, but if we ignore Him long enough and in essence rebel, He stands aside and “allows us” to exercise our free will. I believe that it hurts Him greatly.

Those people wanted meat. They were not satisfied with God’s provision, wonderful as it was and wanted meat so much that they craved for it. Unbridled sin and lack of self control can be addictive!.

…the mixed multitude who were in their midst lusted greatly, so the children of Yisra’ěl also wept again and said, “Who is giving us meat to eat?
“We remember the fish which we ate without cost in Mitsrayim, the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic, but now our throat is dried up. There is naught to look at but this manna!” Numbers 11:4-6

This is why I said earlier that we must be careful in who we associate with. We can become like the company we keep. Water finds its own level and if we are not careful, hang out with the wrong crowd, or keep too much company with people who do not know God, they can drag us down to their level. Their language becomes ours and those cuss words, now commonplace can become part of our vocabulary. I am not being paranoid about this and am not being a religious extremist or bigot but that is how it is. We do however have the “edge”because the greater one lives inside us!

Whatever the cause, they cried out,”give us meat”, give us meat” so much that it angered God and He responded.
Be careful in what you pray for. He said, “If you want meat, I will give you meat. You wanted so much, I will give you more than you bargained for”. What I am about to share next is amazing.

Moses told God that he had 600,000 footmen besides women and children. He rightly stated that feeding this hungry mob would be nigh on impossible and he was right. Jesus told the disciples to feed a hungry group of people and they could not see how that could be done. Without the wisdom of God, we would be no different. Watch this…
The Lord asked Moses, “Is there a limit to the Lord’s power? Now you will see whether or not my words come true.” Numbers11:23

It was after saying that, God imparted the anointing on the 70 elders. It did not depend on Moses alone. To put this into modern day terms, no church or ministry depends only on one person! God may and does give someone a vision or a project, but putting it to work is the “pr0blem”.  Moses needed help, but he was trying to handle everything himself and wearing himself out. His own father in law saw that and gave him some advice. God gave him a vision and sent help. Aaron was the priest. Joshua was the warrior/servant. Jesus appointed 12, then an additional 70 and the numbers grew to 120 and even 500 according to Paul.

We all need to have a vision, but many pastors do not allow others to be part of it! They may say otherwise, but  it seems that they do not want anyone else with a genuine anointing to be sent to their church and start to function. They have a ministry team and employees of course, but those dear folk are only permitted to operate within the boundaries the pastor lays down. Anyone who steps out of line incurs the wrath of the pastor. That is a form of witchcraft! It is the kind of thing that prevailed in Elijah’s day when Jezebel had taken over and all the false gods and idolatry existed. They are back! Find out who or what they are and test it out!

This was a potential issue in Moses’ day. After all, they did make a golden cast calf and worshiped the brass serpent 400 years after God told Moses to make it—for one purpose on one given occasion only as a tool only, not wanting is to be used again.
God told Moses to appoint 70 elders.

Then the Lord came down in the column of smoke and spoke with him. He took some of the Spirit that was on Moses and put it on the 70 leaders. When the Spirit came to rest on them, they prophesied, but they never prophesied again.
Two men, named Eldad and Medad, had stayed in the camp. They were on the list with the other leaders but hadn’t gone with them to the tent. The Spirit came to rest on them, too, and they prophesied in the camp.
Then a young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” So Joshua, son of Nun, who had been Moses’ assistant ever since he was a young man, spoke up and said, “Stop them, sir!”
But Moses asked him, “Do you think you need to stand up for me? I wish all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them.”
Then Moses and the leaders went back to the camp. Numbers11:25-30

What happened then is seen in many churches today. There is need for order and structure, so that things can be done decently and in order, but jealousy, faction fighting, fear of losing control, can and does occur. Excess can be avoided. We can and should test the spirits but not to the extent that the Holy Spirit is muzzled and quenched. If, for example, we know that God wants us to prophesy, we are in full control of our faculties and not share it. The spirit of the prophet is subject to the prophet. We can approach the pastor or leader and ask permission to share. That reveals an element of respect and courtesy. The offer can be accepted or declined and it is as simple as that. The attitude amongst many today is one of, “that person is not one of our group or inner circle of associates, therefore we reject it”. That is as foolish and dangerous as the freaks are who infiltrate meetings for their own objectives.
I recommend you read James carefully about how we treat each other.

It was after Moses and the elders returned to the camp, that God sent quails and this is where things get very interesting.

Moshe and the leaders of Isra’el went back into the camp; and Adonai sent out a wind which brought quails from across the sea and let them fall near the camp, about a day’s trip away on each side of the camp and all around it, covering the ground to a depth of three feet. Numbers 11:30-31

Unless I am very much mistaken, they were nowhere near the sea! Quail can be found living in grassy fields, cropland, and meadow habitats. Wild Japanese quail live in East Asia, Russia and parts of Africa and some populations migrate. They feed mainly on grass seeds, but also eat small insects. Quail live on the ground: foraging, nesting and sleeping in the grass.

The word of God says that they came from the sea, borne by the wind. If they had migrated, as some do, where did they come from and how long did it take for them to arrive? Did they start their journey even before the people started to complain and God knew ahead of time what was going to happen? After all, He knows the end from the beginning and even so, allowed the people to exercise their free will. It was just a matter of time. Another possible answer is that when the people did rebel, God determined that if they wanted meat, He would send them meat and so much that they could not handle any more. He can of course create the environment when anything is possible and so this is an object lesson for us.

I have heard reports from other believers that they checked their bank accounts to find that by some mysterious and inexplicable manner that substantial sums of money suddenly appeared in their account just at the right time to meet a ministry need. I wish that happened to me. Their bank could not trace the source and that in itself is most unusual, because they can easily do that. One day, they did not have the funds and the next day the funds were there—and it was perfectly legal and acceptable.

The account states that the wind brought them and the word used for wind is רוּחַ (rûaḥ) and this is the same word used for the Holy Spirit! That's interesting.

They apparently came from the seaacross the sea and the word used is yām that often refers to the west. It sometimes refers to the Mediterranean sea and to the Red Sea, but the Egyptians were on the other side of the Red Sea, to the west and the people craving those birds wanted to return to Egypt!
Sometimes in scripture, when birds are mentioned, they relate to evil spirits. There is a spiritual connotation to this desire as it opens up a portal to the spirit world!
There may be a connection between a natural inbalanced craving for something and the spirit dimension. It is as if they had rejected God and His ways and chosen an alternative—a substitute. When analysing the meanings of the word, some common synonyms of quail are blench, flinch, recoil, shrink and wince all meaning to draw back in fear or distaste. Putting it together, the reference to quail suggests a shrinking and cowering in fear—but scriptures tell us that God does not give us a spirit of fear.
They had rejected God and His supernatural provision, turned to the natural and fear came in.

If you recall, when anyone disobeyed God in how they gathered and kept it, the manna stank! Why?
I shall discuss this on another occasion.

The quail covered the ground to a depth of three feet in a day's journey in every direction around the entire camp. They were everywhere. These birds vary in size, but they are large enough for a delicious meal. They average an overall length between 6 inches (16-18 cm), stand slightly less and have a body width of 3 inches. There were hundreds and thousands of them and God sent them. From the "good perspective", God provided over and above all that is required. He is the God of the abundance—the overflow. The people spent all day and that night and all the next day in gathering them. They were gluttons. Perhaps a spirit of gluttony was lurking there.

It was pure foolishness as they had no refrigeration. What were they going to do with them?
When Jesus fed the multitude, twelve baskets-full of good portions (not scraps and crumbs) were left over, but not to the excess. I have tried to cover every different aspect in this account, the good and not so good parts, to illustrate that God has ways to meet you and provide for every need and contigency and that we need the wisdom of God to know the truth.

Blessings,
Robert
